Old Drogheda Society Evening Trip to Fourknocks
On Wednesday May 30th, 54 members of the Old Drogheda Society took part in the Visit to Fourknocks and Stamullen . Local Historian and author of "The History of Stamullen Parish " , Brendan Matthews proved to be an excellent guide.
Our first port of call was Fourknocks , near the village of The Naul ,in North County Dublin .
The passage tomb, which is the only part of the Fourknocks site currently open to the public, is believed to have been used between 3000-2400 BC. Fourknocks was excavated in the 1950s by P.J. Hartnett . The tomb has some fine examples of Neolithic art . Since its discovery in 1949 the
roof of the tomb has been reinforced and there is a metal door to prevent the site being vandalised.
Then it was onto Mullaghtelling Henge a magnificent hidden heritage site , not normally open to the public , with breath taking views over the countryside . Brendan's vast local knowledge added to the visual impact.
Then it was on to Stamullen village to visit the early Christian enclosure and view the Cadaver Stone in the local cemetery.
Refreshments were served in the newly opened City North Hotel in Gormanston and all were in agreement that an excellent night had been had .
Details of the June outing and photos of the Fourknocks visit will be published on the website shortly
